14 DAY TRIAL // Clemens Toennies from the Netrunner project had the pleasure of announcing earlier today, February 16, the immediate availability for download of the Netrunner 15 computer operating system, dubbed Prometheus, based on the Kubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) distribution and built around the KDE Plasma 5.2 desktop environment.
With a Linux 3.16 kernel on board, the brand-new Netrunner 15 distribution, which is only available for download for 64-bit systems, brings you all the latest KDE and Qt technologies, including KDE Plasma 5.2, KDE Frameworks 5.7.0, and Qt 5.4. In addition, the operating system updates its pre-installed packages to their latest version as of February 16, 2015.
“We are proud to announce the official release of Netrunner 15 – Prometheus (64bit). Netrunner 15 is revised from the ground up: As the first distribution, it officially ships the new KDE Plasma Desktop 5.2. Therefore, an upgrade from previous Netrunner series with KDE4.x is neither officially available nor really recommended,” was stated in the official release announcement.
SDDM is now used as the default login manager
In Netrunner 15, Simple QML Based Display Manager (SDDM) is used as the default login manager. The desktop theme is a mix between the Oxygen and Breeze styles, and both Add-Ons and Settings components have been refreshed. In Netrunner 15, users will be able to browse the Internet with the powerful and popular Mozilla Firefox 35.0.1 web browser, create all kinds of office documents with LibreOffice 4.4, send and receive email with Mozilla Thunderbird 31.4.0, edit images in style with GIMP 2.8.10, chat with friends and family using Pidgin 2.10.9, watch movies with VLC Media Player 2.2.0, and create gorgeous digital drawings with Krita 2.8.5.
Gmusicbrowser, Radiotray, Atraci, HandBrake, SimpleScreenRecording have been added
In addition, some new applications have been added to the distribution, such as the Gmusicbrowser jukebox application that handles music collections with over 10,000 tracks, Radiotray radio player, Atraci music search tool, Disks disk utility, Skype VoIP client, SimpleScreenRecording screen recording utility, as well as the powerful HandBrake cross-platform video converter software.
All users can download Netrunner 15 (Prometheus) today, while keeping in mind that it includes software packages optimized only for computers supporting the 64-bit (x86_64) CPU architecture.
