A few minutes ago, Linus Torvalds had the pleasure of announcing the fourth Release Candidate (RC) version of the upcoming and highly anticipated Linux 4.0 kernel. According to Linus, Linux kernel 4.0 RC4 is a small release that includes many driver updates and ARM changes.

It appears that Linux kernel 4.0 Release Candidate 4 is a quite small release that brings ARM SoC (System-on-Chip) updates, improves the s390 and Nios II architectures, fixes various networking, virtualization and core kernel issues, and updates the documentation. More details can be found in the appended shortlog.

“Hmm. Nothing particularly strange going on this week either, with perhaps just a slightly larger-than-expected ARM SoC update. So "just" half of the patch is driver updates, with about half of the rest being ARM changes,” says Linus Torvalds. “Nothing particularly stands out here [...] I think we're doing fine for where in the release cycle we are.”

Download Linux kernel 4.0 RC4 right now via Softpedia or directly from the kernel.org website. Please keep in mind, though, that this is an unstable release of the Linux kernel and it should not be deployed on production machines where stability is a must.
