Pinguy OS 14.04.2 LTS has been released today, March 22, and the Live ISO images are now available for download. While there’s no official announcement on the distribution’s homepage at the moment of writing this article, we took it for a test drive in order to see what's new and to create a nice screenshot tour for your viewing pleasure.

Powered by Linux kernel 3.13.0-46 (3.13.0-46.79), which is the latest kernel package used in the LTS (Long Term Support) release of the Ubuntu 14.04.2 (Trusty Tahr) operating system, Pinguy OS 14.04.2 brings an updated base and the latest Linux technologies and applications, all in order to keep the distribution stable and reliable.

Among the pre-installed applications, we can mention Mozilla Firefox 36.0.4, Mozilla Thunderbird 31.5.0, Synaptic Package Manager 0.81.1, VLC Media Player 2.2.0 RC2, GNOME Tweak Tool 3.10.4, LibreOffice 4.2.7, Clementine 1.2.3, GNOME Do 0.9, Shutter 0.93.1, PlayOnLinux 4.2.2, Wine 1.7.38, as well as the latest Steam for Linux client.

Pinguy OS uses a highly customized GNOME desktop environment

Pinguy OS’ desktop layout is highly customized, with a dock (application launcher) located on the bottom edge of the screen, another dock (hidden by default) on the left side of the screen, a beautiful and useful system monitoring and weather report widget, a modern Start Menu, and a couple of useful applets on the top panel.

Pinguy OS uses a highly customized GNOME desktop environment, despite the fact that the distribution is based on Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS, which uses the controversial Unity user interface. You can download Pinguy OS 14.04.2 LTS right now from Softpedia, where you can find both the 64 and 32-bit Live DVD ISO images.
