The home of tomorrow will be smart and it will be a part of the Internet of Things, but what operating systems will be behind everything? Canonical wants to make Ubuntu Snappy Core the engine for the house of the future, and that's the reason it's sponsoring the Mega Hackathon: Hack the Home event.

You might have heard of this term before, Internet of Things, and you might think that it's a complicated concept, but the truth is that it's not. The Internet of Things is a concept that says devices are increasingly getting smarter, and they are connected to the Internet. Even stuff that you wouldn't imagine benefiting from an Internet connection could be online.

Now imagine that you have a chance to build an operating system that can govern all of these devices. Canonical has a real opportunity here to make a difference, and it's pushing its Ubuntu Snappy Core OS so that anyone can use it, no matter the device.

Mega Hackathon: Hack the Home is not about today; it's about tomorrow

Mega Hackathon: Hack the Home is a two-day event that gathers inventors, programmers, and engineers under one roof. They are working on ideas for the future, but they are using platforms from the present, including Ubuntu Snappy Core.

"This unique gathering of Makers, Techies, Engineers, and Artists/Designers will wrangle with a range of platforms, including Snappy Ubuntu Core; sparring to come up with the most inventive and, yet, effective smart home apps. Apps that may feature in every home within the next 10 years. And the prize is a good one! First, second, third and Community prize winners of the Hackathon who use Snappy Ubuntu Core to develop their entry, and who publish their software as 'Snap' package for others to download will see their prize money doubled," notes Canonical.

The Mega Hackathon: Hack the Home event, will take place between April 10 and 11, 2015, and participants will have to register first.
