14 DAY TRIAL // At many of our readers’ request, today we start a new series of screenshot tours that will track the changes implemented in the Sabayon Linux distribution, a rolling-release operating system based on Gentoo.
First of all, we should mention that Sabayon Linux gets new ISO images at the beginning of each month, dated with the current year and month (e.g. Sabayon 15.04 for April 2015), which you can download from Softpedia.
We start our Sabayon Linux screenshot tour series with the Xfce edition. The recently released Xfce 4.12 desktop environment is the base of this Sabayon 15.04 edition, and we have to admit that it looks great.
Great theme and layout, interesting choice of applications
We like the fact that the upper panel is transparent, something we haven't seen on any other Linux distribution that uses Xfce. The theme used by the Sabayon developers is also pleasing to the eye.
The software selection is quite interesting, as the default web browser is Google Chrome. The main BitTorrent client is Transmission, HexChat takes care of all your IRC needs, and GIMP is present if you want to edit photos like a pro.
Among other pre-installed applications, we can mention Audacious audio player, Totem (Videos) movie player, Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Glade UI designer, Pidgin instant messenger, and vncviewer.

The Sabayon 15.04 Xfce distribution is powered by Linux kernel 3.19. The build date of the kernel package is March 9, 2015, so we believe that it's based on the upstream Linux 3.19.0 kernel.
Being a rolling-release operating system based on Gentoo, we believe that some of the software packages are quite old for a bleeding-edge distribution. Also, an office suite is missing from this edition.
