Oracle proposes to deliver Java 9 SDK on September 22nd, 2016

It's a Thursday afternoon, in case you were wondering

Oracle's chief architect of the Java Platform Group, Mark Reinhold, has outlined a “proposed schedule for JDK 9” that will see it delivered on Thursday, September 22nd, 2016.

Reinhold's post on the topic offers the following development milestones:

  • 10 December 2015: Feature Complete
  • 04 February 2016: All Tests Run
  • 25 February 2016: Rampdown Start
  • 21 April 2016: Zero Bug Bounce
  • 16 June 2016: Rampdown Phase 2
  • 21 July 2016: Final Release Candidate
  • 22 September 2016: General Availability

What's coming in version 9? Oracle says we can expect a new modular structure, modular source code and modular run-time images. Did we mention Oracle is keen on a modular approach this time around? A bunch of other candidate inclusions can be found here.

Reinhold floated the milestones above on May 5th and said that if there are no objections by 23:00 UTC on Tuesday, 12 May 2015, then the timeline will stand. At the time of writing – about 05:00 UTC on the 13th - The Reg cannot discern any objections that will derail his plan.

Voting on the list of inclusions we've linked to above runs until 23:30 UTC on Friday, 15 May 2015.

To the diaries, then, readers! Best to leave Friday September 23rd blank for some footling if you're into Java. For the rest of us, doubtless something else will come up. ®
