Clement Lefebvre has published earlier today, June 14, details about the eighth maintenance version of the stable Cinnamon 2.6 open-source desktop environment for the upcoming Linux Mint 17.2 (Rafaela) operating system.

According to the release notes, which have been attached at the end of the article for reference, Cinnamon 2.6.8 is an important release that fixes many issues reported by users since the previous version of the acclaimed desktop environment. As expected, all users are urged to update immediately for the issues mentioned below to be patched.

Among the most important ones, we can mention that the "Menu applet: Removed context menu on recent items (overkill and we're really struggling with performance at startup)" patch has been reverted, and the panel icon of the Power applet has been fixed as it was not being refreshed after coming back to the brightness icon, for example, after a suspend/resume operation.

Moreover, the missing "self" in front of a function in the Power section of the settings has been added, an issue with the Background settings has been patched to no longer fail when the locale is different than expected, the volume OSD (On-Screen Display) is now correctly displayed on the primary monitor for users with multi-monitor configurations, and issues with empty tooltips have been addressed.

Cinnamon 2.6.8 is an important release and everyone should update

In addition to the changes mentioned above, Cinnamon 2.6.8 fixes issues with the window dimming behavior for attached modal dialogs, cleans up the panel icon section as there were several annoying problems in the Menu applet, adds support for opening the edit dialog with a double mouse click on the Menu applet, and fixes multiple typos in the documentation and other areas.

Last but not least, the eighth point release of the Cinnamon desktop environment fixes a panel autohide glitch and no longer uses the deprecated MenuItem component for applets. Cinnamon 2.6.8 is available for download right now, and all Linux Mint 17.1 users are urged to update as soon as possible. The new Cinnamon version might also be available in the software repositories of other Linux distributions.
