Frederic Peters has just informed us about the immediate availability of the third snapshot for the upcoming GNOME 3.18 desktop environment, due for release on September 23, 2015.

We've been reporting about some of the most important core components and applications that are distributed as part of the GNOME 3.17.3 desktop environment all this week, so we recommend reading those articles if you want to know what exactly has been changed, and to learn about the new features implemented until now.

GNOME 3.17.3 is a pre-release software that is currently distributed only on select Linux kernel-based operating systems, which means that not everyone will be able to test it at this time. However, you can always try to use the jhbuild and modulesets provided by the GNOME developers.

"The development of the next GNOME release, 3.17, is going on and a new snapshot, 3.17.3, is now available. Give it a shot!" says Frederic Peters. "Some of us will gather in San Francisco next week for the West Coast Summit 2015, and a month later we will all gather for GUADEC in Gothenburg, Sweden (no relation whatsoever with a conspiracy that doesn't even exist)."

Here are the packages included in GNOME 3.17.3

GNOME 3.17.3 comes with well-known applications, such as Glade, Gedit, Eye of GNOME, Epiphany, Evolution, Evince, Rygel, Orca, Devhelp, Bijiben, as well as core components like GNOME Boxes, GNOME Music, GNOME Software, GNOME Logs, GNOME Software, GNOME Calendar, Gvfs, GTK+, GNOME Chess, Glib2, GDM, and Clutter.

If you manage to get the GNOME 3.17.3 running on your GNU/Linux distribution, please try to keep in mind that it is a pre-release software and some unresolved issues are present, which means that it's not recommended for production use for the moment. The rest of the world should wait for the final release of the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment in the fall of 2015.
