Krita, an open-source digital painting software piece that aims to be the best in its field, has been upgraded to version 2.9.6 and is ready for download.

The Krita team successfully got funding from a Kickstarter project a month ago, and the developers promised one thing above anything else. They wanted to have an app that is just as fast as Photoshop, and they weren't kidding. They have pushed a couple of updates since then, and now they have another one out the door. It's mostly about fixes and a few new features, but Krita has definitely become a much more powerful solution

Now that the Kickstarter campaign ended, the devs are free to make all the changes they want and to implement the ones that were promised as tiers. Krita might not have the popularity it deserves, but that will probably change very soon.

Krita 2.9.6 brings lots of new stuff

"After a month of bugfixing, we give you Krita 2.9.6! With lots of bugfixes, but bugfixes aren’t the only thing in 2.9.6, we also have a few new features! The biggest change is that we now have selection modifiers! These don’t work with the path tool yet, and aren’t configurable, but we're going to work on that. Check out the manual page for the selection tools for more information on how this relates to constraint and from center for the rectangle and ellipse select," wrote the developers.

According to the changelog, continuous transform and crop are now available, color balance, desaturate, dodge, hsv adjustment, index color per-channel and posterize filters have been sped up, Cut/Copy Sharp actions in the menu have been activated, a new default workspace has been made available, the brush “speed” sensor now works properly, and a preview for “Image Background Color and Transparency” dialog has been added

Check the official announcement for more details about this released. Krita 2.9.6 can be downloaded from Softpedia. It should also arrive on the main software repositories of mainstream distributions.
