While digging the Internet, we've found a captivating discussion on the Ubuntu Touch mailing list between three Canonical employees who are involved in the development of the Ubuntu for phones mobile operating system.

Canonical's Yuan-Chen Cheng came with a very interesting question posted as a reply to Lukasz Zemczak's last night's report on the work done by the Ubuntu Touch developer for the upcoming OTA-7 software update.

The question was if the Ubuntu Touch development team had any plans to rebase Canonical's mobile operating system on the anticipated Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) release or if it would be skipped.

Mr. Zemczak answered immediately, saying that at the moment there are no plans on switching the stable Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet)-based devices to the Wily Werewolf branch, which means that it will be skipped for this cycle.

"Currently there are no plans on switching our stable devices to Wily, so in a way we will skip it. Right now Wily is like an experimental ground for future Ubuntu releases. All our Ubuntu Phone development is focusing on Vivid," said Lukasz Zemczak.

Canonical needs a strong plan for the switch from Vivid to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

As Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) will not be taken into consideration for a stable base of the Ubuntu Touch operating system, Canonical will need a strong plan for when they decide to move from the current Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) base.

"There is a growing concern, however, that the lack of attention to Wily will hit us hard (w/ compounded interest) when we want to switch off of Vivid," says Canonical's Oliver Ries in a reply to the conversation between the other two Ubuntu Touch developers.

Most probably, Canonical will consider the upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS release a very good candidate for the next major stable version of Ubuntu Touch, so the developers will start searching soon for a feasible path to make the switch from Vivid in the near future.
