The Skype service is currently down in some countries and Microsoft says that it’s already aware of the problem and a fix is on its way.

While the company hasn’t said a single thing about the possible cause of the outage, it claims that the web-based service at web.skype.com works as expected.

For the moment, users who are impacted by the problem cannot change their status and all their contacts will be displayed as offline. Starting new calls doesn’t work for the time being, but instant messages are still being delivered as usual.

“Some of you may experience problems with Skype presence and may not see online. We have detected an issue with the status settings of Skype. We're working on a fix for this issue and hope to have an update for you soon. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused while we get this resolved,” Microsoft briefly said in a statement released today.

There’s no information on when the fix could arrive, but it’s pretty clear that Microsoft is working at full speed to get Skype back online, especially because the desktop and mobile clients are the ones being used by everyone these days. In the meantime, however, if you really need to start a call with someone on Skype, going to Skype for Web is the best option until the desktop client is back up.

Update 1: according to comments sent by our readers, Skype is currently down all over the world and not just in some countries, as Microsoft originally stated.
