14 DAY TRIAL // Arne Exton, the creator of several free and commercial GNU/Linux and Android-x86 distributions, has informed us earlier today, October 11, about a new update for his AndEX Live CD.
AndEX Build 151010 was actually released on October 10, 2015, it is based on the latest version of the free Android-x86 project, as well as on Google's Android 5.1.1 Lollipop mobile operating system. The new build is powered by the long-term supported Linux kernel 4.0.8, despite the fact that Android-x86 5.1 uses Linux kernel 4.0.9 LTS.
The main difference between AndEX Live CD and the Android-x86 project is that the former includes the GAPPS package, giving users access to various Google apps and services, including Google Play Store, Google Play Services, Google Maps, and YouTube. Additionally, the Facebook, Twitter, Viber, and OfficeSuite 8 apps are also included.
"Most important is that Build 151010 can run and be installed in VirtualBox and VMWare. Also that OpenGL ES hardware acceleration for Intel, AMD Radeon and Nvidia (Nouveau) chipsets is enabled. I’ve also added the Twitter and Viber apps," says Arne Exton in an email to Softpedia.
AndEX's Linux 4.0.8 kernel has some extra features
Mr. Exton informs us that his AndEX Lollipop Live CD includes a special Linux kernel package called 4.0.8-exton-android-x86, which apparently was injected with some extra features, such as additional drivers for better hardware support, such as ASUS, Acer, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Thinkpad, Toshiba, and Panasonic laptops.
Being a commercial product, AndEX Live CD will cost you the sum of $9 (€8) and it can be purchased from the developer's website, where you will find all the details you need to write the ISO image on a USB stick and boot it from your computer's BIOS, as well as detailed installation instructions if you decide to keep it.
