A new milestone has been crossed by Steam

It looks like Steam for Linux managed to move past another milestone, 1,700 games for the open source platform.

It took less than a month to go from 1,600 to 1,700 games in the Steam for Linux library, and the fact that Linux has less than 1% on Steam seems to not really be a factor.

Valve has put a lot of faith into Linux, and it's trying really hard to make a push for this platform. The result won't be immediate, but the community is following them.

Porting games to Linux or developing them from the get-go is no longer a difficult task for studios. Many of the important gaming engines already support the Linux platform and that can't be an excuse any longer.

This is one of the main reasons why we see more than 100 games launched on Steam for Linux in the space of just one month.

1,700 games for Linux users is not bad

Before Steam for Linux launched all the way back in November 2012, you could count and remember all the games that have support for this platform. Things were really bad.

The drivers for video cards were in a worse shape, and there was no interest to see Linux as a gaming platform. Who would want to game on Linux? As it turns out, quite a lot of people want to do this.

As it stands right now, there are about 10 million active Steam players, so 1% of that means that there are about 100,000 active Linux players. It's not a bad number, and it needs to increase, but for now they have access to 1,700 titles.

There's no indication that things are slowing down, so we'll likely see in just a few months Steam for Linux moving way past the 2,000 games mark.
