A few moments ago, December 16, 2015, KDE had the great pleasure of announcing the final release and general availability of the KDE Applications 15.12 collection of apps for the KDE Plasma 5.5 desktop environment.

After one Beta build and a Release Candidate (RC) version, KDE Applications 15.12 launches today for the next-generation KDE Plasma 5.5 desktop environment, which was released last week with dozens of new features, polished functions, and countless bugfixes, updating most of the included KDE applications and adding some spectacular new features.

"KDE is excited to announce the release of KDE Applications 15.12, the December 2015 update to KDE Applications. This release brings one new application and feature additions and bug fixes across the board to existing applications. The team strives to always bring the best quality to your desktop and these applications, so we're counting on you to send your feedback," reads today's announcement.

Meet Spectacle

In KDE Applications 15.12, the KDE developers managed to port even more KDE apps to KDE Frameworks 5, among which we can mention Klickety, Krfb, KSystemLog, Artikulate, as well as various games from the KDE Games collection. Additionally, the KDE Image Plugin Interface received some attention in this release. KDE Applications 15.12 now sports a total of 126 KDE apps ported to KDE Frameworks 5, despite the fact that some applications were removed, such as SuperKaramba, KTux, and Amor.

One of the coolest features of KDE Applications 15.12 is the addition of a new screenshot utility, called Spectacle, which replaced the well-known KSnapshot tool. Spectacle boasts a great number of new features, including a refreshed user interface, support for taking composite screenshots of pop-up menus, and much more. Moreover, the Kdenlive and Ark apps received various improvements, and some of the most annoying bugs were finally fixed.

KDE Applications 15.12 will have three maintenance release, KDE Applications 15.12.1, which is expected on January 12, 2016, Applications 15.12.2, due for release on February 16, 2016, and Applications 15.12.3, which will see the light of day on March 15, 2016. All users who run the latest KDE Plasma 5.5 desktop environment are urged to update to today's KDE Applications 15.12 software suite as soon as possible to enhance their KDE experience.
