The Windows camouflage feature has been removed

Just a few moments ago, December 23, the development team behind the Tails amnesic incognito live system had the great pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download of the first Beta build of the upcoming Tails 2.0 Live CD.

Tails 2.0 promises to be a significant and important milestone in the history of the best anonymous Live CD project, which was used by ex-CIA employee Edward Snowden to stay online hidden and safe from the government's eyes, as well as to keep his privacy from being violated.

The 2.0 milestone of the Tails Live CD will be the first to be based on the latest and most advanced Debian GNU/Linux 8 (Jessie) operating system, which means that it will include all of its security patches and software updates. Another essential feature of Tails 2.0 will be the switch to the modern GNOME Shell user interface.

However, the Tails developers will ship a pre-configured version of GNOME Shell that runs in Classic mode, but provides users with a great improvement over the deprecated GNOME Flashback desktop environment that is currently offered in the 1.8 series of Tails.

"The most noticeable change is probably the move to GNOME Shell, configured in Classic mode," said the devs in today's announcement. "There is only one piece of bad news, that makes us a bit sad, though: we had to remove the Windows camouflage feature, since our call for help to port it to GNOME Shell (issued in January, 2015) was unsuccessful."

What's under the hood of Tails 2.0

The Tails devs have also offered us a quick look at what's under the hood of the upcoming Tails 2.0 Live CD. Therefore, we can report that Tails 2.0 will adopt most of the modern GNU/Linux technologies, such as Linux namespaces, which make all system services harder to exploit, thus providing users with a safer and pleasant experience.

Last but not least, Tails 2.0 will feature a more accurate way of informing users that the TOR network is ready. If you're curious to see what Tails 2.0 looks like, check out the screenshots attached on the bottom of the page, otherwise you can download Tails 2.0 Beta 1 right now from Softpedia and take the Live CD for a test drive.
