Parted Magic LLC has announced the release of the first update for 2016 of their commercial Parted Magic Live CD targeted at partitioning tasks and based on various open source GNU/Linux technologies.

According to the release notes, Parted Magic 2016_01_06 was published on the project's website on the day of January 6, 2016, bringing updates to various core components while also adding a few new packages. Of course, various issues reported by users since the previous release were resolved as well.

Among the updated components, we can mention NetworkManager 1.0.8, Mozilla Firefox 43.0.3, Google Chrome 47.0.2526.106, OpenSSL 1.0.1q, Mesa 3D Graphics Library 11.0.7, TigerVNC 1.6.0, xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.12, ModemManager 1.4.10, glibc-zoneinfo 2015g, and kernel-firmware 20151211git.

"You’ll also notice our delivery service has changed from E-Junkie to DPD. [...] We’ll send out a simple email to let you know about stable releases. We also lowered the prices on all tangible goods and now calculate shipping. This is a better deal when you buy more than one item," reads the announcement.

Powered by Linux kernel 4.3.2

Parted Magic 2016_01_06 is powered by Linux kernel 4.3.2, adds the Fstransform 0.9.3 command-line program, which can be used for converting a certain filesystem to another (e.g. XFS to EXT4), and introduces the Isdct 2.3.1.400-14 CLI tool for managing and secure erasing recent NVMe and Intel SSD drives.

Among the newly added programs, we can mention Sysstat 9.0.6.1, FLTK 1.3.3, Dash 0.5.8, libjpeg-turbo 1.4.2, aic94xx-seq 30, procps-ng 3.3.10, and xf86-video-amdgpu 1.0.0, the open source AMDGPU driver. Last but not least, the Parted Magic developers inform users about a bug in the LXPanel components of the LXDE desktop environment.

As usual, you can buy the latest Parted Magic 2016_01_06 release from the distribution's website or via Softpedia, where you'll find an in-depth review of the project. Please note that Parted Magic costs $9 as a digital download version.
